Periodic relearning may be best for long term memory
Recent research has shown that suggested that periodically relearning important information will increase the So, for important stuff, try reviewing the information at intervals. There is a post on the blog, How To Memorize Stuff, with more information about this.
Keep your mind active and challenged
Find some new things that interest you. Try to step outside your mental comfort zone once in a while.
One way to try something new is to attend a class run by a local group. Learn to play bridge, study local history, learn to paint watercolors, learn to play the piano or, what is thought to be one of the best ways to keep your mind active, learn a foreign language.
A recent way to keep your mind active and challenged is the introduction of brain training programs for the computer. If you are interested see the page on brain training.
Be physically active
There is a lot of evidence that being physically active is good for memory as well as general well being.
Exercise gives you a healthy body. Since your brain is part of your body, it seems logical that exercise will help give you a healthy brain too.
What kind of exercise? So far studies have not shown that one kind of exercise is better than any other. The best exercise is the exercise that you will stick with, and do on a regular basis. Walking, biking, doing an organized class, whatever works.
