Eating less alternate days may be a way to diet
A new study looked at the effects of eating 25% of calories on alternate days. The study found that there was significant weight loss, 12 lb over 8 weeks. Additionally cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure all dropped.
Fasting occasionally has been shown to decrease cardiovascular disease risk. For more information see blog post about occasional fasting.
Does including regular “free days” in a diet make it harder to diet?
A new study in rats looked at a diet that was regular chow 5 days and sweet chow for 2 days every week. Compared to those only eating regular chow the mice with “free days” put on weight but also had symptoms of drug withdrawal, being stress and anxious, when they returned to regular chow after the sweet chow.
This withdrawal could lead to craving for food and actually increase the likelihood of bingeing. See the blog post Diets with free days may lead to withdrawal symptoms and undermine dieting.
Can sugar shorten life?
A study using worms showed that those that had glucose added to their food had a shorter lifespan than those that did not have glucose added to their food.
Is this another piece of evidence for eating a low carb diet? For more information see the blog post Can sugar shorten life?
