Multifunctional Natural Skin Lightening Agents

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a natural product that is made by a number of different fungi. In Japan, kojic acid is widely eaten since it has been shown to enhance the activity of the immune system. The majority of the kojic acid both for skin lightening and for eating, is a byproduct of the manufacture of sake, Japanese rice wine.

As a skin lightener, kojic acid works by inhibiting an enzyme that is needed to make melanin, the brown pigment in skin. Less melanin means less hyperpigmentation.

Kojic acid is approved as an effective skin lightener by the American Academy of Dermatologists.

In addition to stimulation of the immune system, kojic acid has been demonstrated to have both antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes it a good skin lightener for those with acne or occasional breakouts.

L-Arbutin

Arbutin is a natural skin lightener that is related structurally to hydroquinone. It is usually extracted from the Bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos), though it also found in wheat and the skins of pears.

Arbutin, like kojic acid, works by stopping the action of an enzyme that is needed to make melanin.

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is found in wheat and rye, as well as a yeast that naturally lives on skin. So there is already some azelaic acid on your skin!

Azelaic acid is found in several prescription skin lighteners, such as Finacea, that are prescribed for the treatment of melasma. In addition, to slowing the formation of the brown pigment melanin, azelaic acid also slows the proliferation (increase in number), and is toxic to melanocytes in the skin. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin. Therefore, azelaic acid has two different mechanisms of reducing hyperpigmentation.

Azelaic acid has several other properties in addition to being a skin lightener.

One of the properties of azelaic acid is as a light chemical peel. Like all chemical peels it breaks down keratin on the surface of the skin. This releases dead cells, which are attached to the skin surface by keratin. The loss of the dead cells gives a smoother surface to the skin, leads to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and increases the fading of hyperpigmentation and rosacea. Additionally, azelaic acid will help unclog and shrink pores, and prevent blackheads.

Azelaic acid has antibacterial action. It has been shown to affect the growth of some types of bacteria that are commonly found in follicles in the skin. Therefore azelaic acid is good for acne. The exfoliating action of azelaic, by smoothing out the surface of the skin, reduces the visible signs of acne and unclogs pores. Plus the antibacterial action helps with acne. Some prescription creams, used for acne, contain azelaic acid.

Another benefit of azelaic acid is that it is an anti-inflammatory. It will help soothe any skin irritation, especially for those with acne, occasional breakouts and rosacea. Azelaic acid also has antioxidant properties.

Licorice Root Extract

Licorice Root has been used medicinally for many years. It is widely used in the Middle East for skin lightening, and its use in now spreading to other regions of the world. The extract contains a number of compounds that have been shown to have skin lightening activity these include glabrene, isolquiritigenin, glabridin and liquirtin.

As well as fading pigmentation, licorice has anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, licorice will protect soothe and you from any irritation.

Antioxidants

There are four antioxidants in Donell (Super Skin) Brightening Cream. They are Azelaic acid, Cassia Betaglycan, which contains D-catechin, L-ascorbic acid (the active form of vitamin C) and witch hazel.

Witch hazel contains many antioxidants including flavonoids and catechin, and is a strong source of antioxidant power.

Moisturizing and Hydration

Squalane

Squalane is a natural moisturizer. It readily enters the skin and is thought to aid the movement of the other ingredients of the cream into the skin. Squalane makes the skin more supple and supplies oil to moisturize dry skin.

Glycerin

Glycerin (glycerol) is a humectant. This means that it attracts moisture. It is commonly added to both pharmaceutical and beauty skin products.

Anti-inflammatory

In addition to the anti-inflammatory actions of azelaic acid, witch hazel and licorice root extract there are three other anti-inflammatory components in Donell (Super Skin) Brightening Cream.

Cassia Betaglycan

Cassia betaglycan, an extract from Cassia bark, has an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally cassia betaglycan moisturizes and rehydrates skin, making it look better. Cassia betaglycan is soothing and hydrating, if there is any skin irritation.

L-Alpha Bisabolol (levomenol)

L-alpha bisabolol, also called levomenol, besides having anti-inflammatory properties, also speeds healing of skin. This makes L-alpha bisabolol an ideal component, for those who have acne or rosacea.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is well known for its soothing properties. It also has some antibacterial and antifungal properties.
