What are the advantages of Mandelic Acid and Malic Acid over Glycolic Acid?
Effective with less irritation
Like glycolic acid both mandelic and malic acids are alpha hydroxy acids.
Neither mandelic nor malic acid penetrates the skin as deeply as glycolic acid. This means that their action is concentrated on the surface. The result is that neither acid is as irritating as glycolic acid.
Mandelic is the least penetrating AHA, so it is virtually non-irritating.
The decreased irritation and concentration on the surface of the skin means that M2 Skin Refinish 20% can be used daily. Every day use of the high concentration of mandelic acid in M2 Skin Refinish 20% results in an effective daily exfoliation.
Mandelic Acid does not cause hyperpigmentation
One problem that can occur in all skin types, but is more common in those with darker skin types, is that harsh irritating treatments, such as glycolic acid, can actually cause more pigmentation in the skin. This is due to the fact that for many of us, the response of skin our skin to inflammation is an increase of production of the pigment melanin.
Mandelic acid, since it does not cause significant irritation, does not provoke an anti-inflammatory response in the skin, and so does not cause areas of darkening of the skin, or darkening of scars.
Therefore, mandelic acid is excellent for those with acne, where scars will be very obvious if they are more pigmented than the surrounding skin.
In darker skin types, in particular, there is an increased likelihood that irritation will cause areas of darkening of the skin. For this reason mandelic acid is recommended for darker skin types.
Mandelic Acid has antibacterial properties
Mandelic acid has antibacterial properties so it recommended for those with acne or the occasional breakout.
Other properties of Mandelic Acid
Mandelic acid like any chemical peel will fade hyperpigmentation, including sun spots and melasma. Since it is non-irritating it is good for rosacea.
After a period of treatment there should be a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Like all home chemical peels, don’t expect instant miracles, it takes a little time.
Mandelic Acid is safe
Mandelic acid is not toxic. A prescription use for mandelic acid is treatment of urinary tract infections (Hiprex , Mandelamine, Urex,). It is approved for use in pregnant women.
Malic acid
Malic acid is a fruit acid. The genus Malus is the apple family. Malic acid is found at high levels in unripe apples, before they become sweet; hence the name. It is also found in other unripe fruits, such as grapes. Malic acid is used in food to provide tartness. Most sour candies contain malic acid, for example Sweet Tarts and Jolly Ranchers.
In addition to its exfoliation properties, malic acid is also a humectant, so it has a moisturizing effect on the skin.
Ubiquinone (CoQ10)
Ubiquinone, also known as CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10), is present in M2 Skin Refinish 20%. It is a very powerful antioxidant that is found in all the cells of our body.
The levels of CoQ10 throughout our bodies decrease as we age. This can mean that the skin becomes deficient in CoQ10.
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is an anti-inflammatory and helps reduce scarring. It will reduce inflammation.
It also helps plump the skin which makes fine lines and wrinkles less obvious.
Squalene and Algae Extract
Both squalene and algae extract are gentle moisturizers that does not block pores (noncomedogenic). Squalene makes the skin more supple.
Contains no potentially harmful chemicals
When this lotion was reformulated and renamed several common components of skin care products that have been suggested to have negative effects were removed.
Most of the potentially harmful chemicals in skincare products are added for purposes such as to fix fragrance, or improve the feel of the lotion. They are not generally ingredients that are active in the skin.
